Courtship
I don't have any personal experience with courtship (yet!), but I've done quite a bit of reading on it. These are some books that I've read, and I appreciate the viewpoints of each one. I'll put my thoughts on each book next to the titles.
The Pattern of Courtship, by Natali Miller. This is put out by Canon Press. I like this little booklet because it really goes into the history of courtship and the history of dating, and shows how today's mindsets toward relationships are pushing us towards more divorce. There is more in the book, but you'll have to get it yourself and read it to find out! :)
Of Knights and Fair Maidens, by Jeff and Danielle Meyers. This is a good book for teenagers to read, I think. It has a good explanation of what courtship is (and isn't!) I don't agree with their having kissed before their marriage ceremony, myself, but otherwise I recommend this book.
Old-Fashioned Courtship and How It Works, by Jeff and Marge Barth. I enjoyed reading this book! Jeff and Marge Barth tell the stories of two of their oldest sons meeting and developing relationships with their future wives. Their approach may seem a bit extreme to some, but I don't consider that a problem in recommending the book. I really enjoy reading how other people worked out their courtships. :)
Her Hand in Marriage, by Douglas Wilson. I'd recommend parents read this book first, if they intend to let their children read it as well. I liked it, myself! There is one small part where he condones teasing of the courting brother or sister by the siblings.....I don't care for that attitude myself.....but on the whole I think the book is good. It will give parents some really helpful ideas.
Best Friends for Life, by Michael and Judy Phillips. Another enjoyable book! This book follows 4 couples who have 4 different "styles" of relationships.....and follows them for several years through their married lives. The authors discuss various problems that can come from different types of relationships, all from a Scriptural perspective. Definitely good for parents to read, but also older teenagers.
The Courtship of Sarah McLean, by Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Castleberry. This is one of a "set" of 3 fiction books by this husband and wife. The stories are a bit idealistic, but not so much as to be unreasonable. There is nothing questionable in this book, at all, and you can feel free to let your older children read it freely. :)
Jeff McLean: His Courtship, by Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Castleberry. This story is about the brother of Sarah McLean. It's pretty much the same type of story in the first book, but all from a guy's point of view. Again, nothing questionable in here at all!
Waiting for Her Isaac, by Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Castleberry. This is along the same lines as the other two books, but with a different twist to the story! I enjoyed it!
